Tomáš Magnusek is today a well-known film producer, screenwriter, director, and actor. Recently, he even has his own television talk show and is also active in politics. But his path to film was not the traditional one. He did not graduate from FAMU or any other film school. His original profession is today perhaps unknown to many younger viewers.
He graduated from the Evangelical Academy in Náchod and later specialized in special education. His first career steps did not lead him in front of or behind the camera, but in front of the blackboard and school desks. And it was this teaching work that inspired him to write the script for his most famous film.
In 2010, a film called Bastardi was released in cinemas, stirring discussions and causing a wave of controversy. You either loved or hated this film. Well-known actors appeared in the film such as Kristýna Leichtová and Ladislav Potměšil. In a supporting role, the Slovak rapper Patrik "Rytmus" Vrbovský also briefly appeared on the screen. In one interview, Magnusek mentioned that it was a very personal and risky endeavor. But in the end it paid off – both the public and critics received him as a promising creator and the film got two more sequels.
In an interview at the Master Prix Cultural Contribution Awards held at the Lucerna cinema in Prague, he is currently working on another piece.
"We are now filming Bastards, where Majer is acting, and I'm preparing the Life is Life film. It's a kind of Czech story about four famous singers who argue with each other, hurt each other and now have to get back together."
Tomáš Magnusek himself was involved in the presentation of awards. He is in fact on the board of the Life of the Artist foundation and is the chairman of the Artes art association.
Among the awardees were, for example, radio and TV presenter Saskia Burešová, the father of the singer Tereza Kerndlová - singer Ladislav Kerndl, music producer and politician Michal Kocáb, and others.
"I love these lifetime achievement awards. I know it may seem like it's just for retirees. But it's for people who have been grinding at something their whole life and who should not be forgotten. Many of them just sit at home today because they are of a certain age or are having troubles. Every such meeting, when they meet somewhere other than some work obligation, is simply divine."
In addition, he also serves as the chairman of the Writers' Association.
Magnusek seems to have a very varied working life. As we mentioned in the introduction, he is not only active in the film industry.
He serves as a councilor of the city Náchod and since 2024 he is the chairman of the movement TMN - Tomáš Magnusek to the Senate.
In the past elections, for example, the chairman of the Oath Movement Robert Šlachta supported him.
We asked Tomáš Magnus during an interview before the ceremonial ceremony what he thinks the role of culture actually is in contemporary society riddled with security threats and economic challenges.
"Certainly to hold some value of who we are, what we need. And to entertain, even to entertain people a little, Educate them and entertain, that's the basic. Because everyone has enough of such mentoring. So I'm more of a person who says entertain, educate and calm."
He is known for battling obesity all his life. Even though he managed to lose several tens of kilograms years ago, he quickly regained the lost weight. He himself has stated that food is his only vice. He is, in fact, a non-smoker and also a teetotaler.
We asked him what he likes to drink the most during Christmas and what will be on his table for the Christmas Eve dinner this year.
"I prefer to drink soda, sparkling water, I really love it. I don't drink much alcohol. On Christmas Eve, I like three or four types of meat - white sausage, schnitzel, chicken, Bavarian minced meat and a piece of fish fillet. To this a little salad, mainly meat. Greetings to all vegetarians, I apologize."
