Concerts by the singer were plagued by problems

Recent events in our southern neighbor's country revolve around two seemingly different occurrences. Nevertheless, they have one thing in common – musical shows attracting the attention of hundreds of thousands of fans. The first is the legal aftermath of three Taylor Swift concerts, which were ultimately canceled due to the threat of a terrorist attack. Simultaneously, there is the 70th anniversary of Eurovision, along with its associated TV broadcasts and concerts. Five countries have withdrawn from the competition. But let's go step by step ...

At the end of April, a trial began in Austria for a 21-year-old Austrian citizen with North Macedonian roots, who is being held accountable for preparing a thwarted terrorist attack on a concert by American singer Taylor Swift in August 2024, reported the agency AP.

Live Terrorism

The Austrian identified as Beran A. researched information about explosives on the internet, made a small amount of acetone peroxide explosive, and repeatedly attempted to purchase firearms and a grenade. He intended to kill not only using explosives at the concert but also with a knife and was prepared to die in the attack himself. Thanks to a tip from a foreign intelligence service, the plan was thwarted, and Beran A. was arrested the year before last in August. However, organizers canceled Swift's three concerts in Vienna, where about 200,000 fans were expected, due to security reasons.

„I partially admit guilt,"

quoted Beran A. ČTK, when he appeared in court at the end of the month.

Beran A. in court, which is taking place in Wiener Neustadt, spoke among other things about his fascination with the terrorist attack where in 2020 an assailant in Vienna killed four people and injured others before being shot by police. The accused stated that it was spectacular.

Along with the Austrian, a Slovak citizen is also on trial. Although, according to investigators, he did not participate in preparing the attack on the concert, they jointly formed a terrorist cell. Both the Austrian and the Slovak made partial confessions before the court. They both face up to 20 years in prison.

Boycott of Eurovision

Just a few dozen kilometers away, the 70th anniversary of Eurovision has started. This competition, which last year with 166 million viewers was the most-watched music event in the world, has in the past served as a springboard for performers such as the Swedish group ABBA or singer Céline Dion. Austria earned the right to host the current edition thanks to last year's victory by singer JJ with the song "Wasted Love."

This event, however, is accompanied by controversy. Five countries, specifically Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland, Slovenia, and Iceland, have decided to boycott the event due to Israel's participation. The reason is that, according to the UN, Israel has been committing genocide against Palestinians in the Gaza Strip for two years. Spain had already requested that the contest organizers, EBU, discuss Israel's participation in the contest due to the situation in the Gaza Strip before this year's event. The last time the Eurovision was involved was in 2022 when the European Broadcasting Union excluded Russia due to its military invasion of Ukraine.

The Irish public broadcaster RTE stated regarding Israel that it would not broadcast the competition "in view of the horrific loss of life in Gaza and the ongoing humanitarian crisis that continues to threaten the lives of many civilians." It added that it is also deeply concerned about the killing of journalists in Gaza and the ongoing refusal of Israeli authorities to allow international journalists access to the Gaza Strip. The Dutch broadcasting company Avrotros argued that Israel's participation in the Eurovision competition contradicts the responsibility it has as a public broadcasting company.

Past Sins

Disputes over Israel's participation in Eurovision have accompanied the last two editions of this event. Israel has long denied accusations of committing genocide. Additionally, Tel Aviv faces allegations of attempting to politically interfere with the format of the contest. Critics argue that the Jewish state exploits Eurovision for its own propaganda. For instance, two years ago, Israeli singer Eden Golan had to change the lyrics of her song because, according to the organizers, it referenced a Hamas attack from October 7, 2023. Similarly, the country faced allegations in the years 1974, 1976, 1983, 2000, 2007, and 2009.

Last year, there was even a recount of votes for the Israeli participant Yuval Raphael. According to Finnish television Yle, the Israeli state agency allegedly paid for advertising that called for repeated voting for its contestant. According to the viewers, she was first, but according to the jury, only second. Although the European Broadcasting Union investigated the matter, it found no intent.

However, Israel is not the only one. Among the countries that have been subject to similar criticisms in the past were Georgia, Ukraine, Armenia, Portugal, Italy, and Greece.

The music business resonates across the entire society, as evidenced by the example of Taylor Swift's concerts and the recent Eurovision events. It does not even spare such a country that was until now considered an oasis of peace, harmony, and high quality of life.
