Dozens of enraged farmers demonstrated on Thursday in France and Greece. Protesters halted traffic and blocked key roads with tractors to resist against the European Union's plans to conclude a free trade agreement with five South American countries.
Farmers drove in with hundreds of tractors to Paris and gathered in front of the lower house of the French Parliament, the National Assembly, which is under the strict supervision of a large number of police officers. In Greece, farmers escalated nationwide protests and initiated a 48-hour blockade of major highways, intersections and toll stations. Tractors lined up on key routes throughout the country and stopped all traffic except for emergency service vehicles in protest against the controversial agreement between the EU and Mercosur and rising costs. They are particularly concerned about the lowering of goods prices on the European market, according to the AP agency.
