President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday presented a new program aimed at bolstering French armed forces by training thousands of volunteers aged 18 and 19 starting from next year. It is part of a broader response to concerns of a Russian threat to European nations beyond the scope of the war in Ukraine.
Young volunteers will serve in uniform for 10 months only on French territory and overseas territories, not in foreign military operations, Macron said in a speech at the Varces military base, located in the French Alps. Next year, 3,000 volunteers will participate in the program, and the number is expected to rise to 50,000 trained "reservists" annually, the AP agency reported.
