Miloslav Mejzlík at the Master Prix awards ceremony

Miloslav Mejzlík is known from the theatre stages and television screens. Audiences may know him from famous series such as Family Ties, Very Fragile Relationships, Street or Angel's Detective. The younger audience, who is more into computer games, may know him as the voice of the character Steve in the game Mafia II. We caught him at the awards ceremony for lifetime cultural contribution in Lucerna cinema in Prague. In the interview, he talked about the theater crisis, young acting talents and also mentioned Netflix or Christmas.

Miloslav Mejzlík undoubtedly belongs to the icons of the Czech theater scene and cinematography. The theater is his second home, and he feels at home in front of the movie camera. He is also a member of the Actors' Association Presidium, for which he distributed awards for lifelong contributions last year. While this year's role was fulfilled by the association president, actor and director Ondřej Kepka. In addition to his work in culture, he is also a member of an association for the mentally handicapped in Třebíč.

Housing Problems

When we asked him how he was, he complained and expressed satisfaction at the same time.

"I'm doing quite problematically at the moment because I'm dealing with housing problems, but hopefully that will be resolved. And otherwise, in terms of work, thank God I still have plenty of work, even at my age."

stated in an interview for LP-Life.cz the well-known actor and dubber. Shortly after, we asked him what he thinks about this year's awardees.

"I was invited, of course, because I have a lot of colleagues here, older colleagues, whom I may not have seen for several years, so I am looking forward to them a lot. I believe that every award at this age is a certain honor and for individuals to it I can only say that I wish them all the best, especially good health."

And if he were to award the prize again this year, who would he award it to?

"That is a question to which I probably will not answer exactly, because there are many colleagues who should receive this prize, and there are many of them also in the regions. I've been through regional theatres, I've been to Zlín, Uherské Hradiště. And of course, I support my regional colleagues above all. I would be glad if next year it would be someone from the region again."

Theatre is a completely different experience than cinema, says

Recently, it is known that the number of cinema visitors worldwide is decreasing. We observe a similar trend across the whole culture, including theatre.

Miloslav Mejzlík perceives the difference between cinema and theatre very clearly.

"Theatre is a meeting of people and shared perception of the viewer with the auditorium. And live art, I believe, I dare to say, is eternal. And if we talk about the crisis of theatre, then the former director of the Na Zábradlí Theatre, Mr. Vodička, used to say that the theatre has been in crisis since antiquity."

And what does he think is the worst thing that can happen to an actor - whether on stage or on a film set?

"The worst can probably be memory loss. I think about it sometimes."

Closely watched young talents

In the interview, we asked him if he is following any emerging acting stars. Among the young generation of actors, we can find some very resonant names who managed to achieve considerable success and recognition of acting heavyweights at a young age. For example, we can mention Oskar Hese, Vojtěch Vodochodský or Petr Uhlík.

"I won't name names, but of course I watch. My career path is such that I call it from the cellar to gold - I guest at the National Theatre and at the same time I play on so-called underground stages, where I meet a lot of young actors. I think the upcoming generation is very good and successful. I like them and above all it is living water for me."

Netflix surprises him

Someone might think that one of the most popular online platforms for watching movies and series is only for young people. Miloslav Mejzlík will quickly correct you in that case.

"Of course, I watch Netflix, because it amazes me how much money can be put into such works. I watch the art, costumes, and often interesting stories."

He does not spend Christmas at home

And because Christmas time is approaching, in an interview we asked him how he usually spends Christmas.

"I have a cottage in Moravia, so I spend every Christmas there. For me, Christmas is a holiday of peace and of course also those Christmas traditions I encounter there in the village."
