Originally a rather ancient agricultural village called Přední Ovenec, now one of the most sought-after districts in Prague. Bubeneč is located on the left bank of the Vltava River in Prague 6 and Prague 7. Thanks to the extensive construction of villas and apartment buildings, today it boasts a truly rich display of magnificent First Republic villas that, even if just for a moment, transport you to times past. If you desire to uncover the secrets of unique architecture on your daily walks while being close to the city center, then Bubeneč is exactly the place for you.
Bubeneč began to take shape in the 20th century when it was elevated to town status in 1904. In 1922, it officially became part of Greater Prague. Not everything was preserved in its original state due to post-war construction, but the legendary and now iconic pub managed to do so. The Na Slamníku pub is one of the oldest operating pubs in Prague, making it a must-visit. The original historical core of Bubeneč consists of the buildings around Krupkovo Square and the Church of St. Gothard. It is built in a classical style and is the only sacral building of this type within Prague. As mentioned, Bubeneč is full of unique architecture and hidden treasures that you can discover over time.
The beauty of this area is evidenced by the number of villas owned by famous personalities. Nothing tells you more about a location than its original or current residents. The wealthy elite built lavish, almost fairy-tale-like villas here with the help of the most famous architects. In Tišina, you can find a neo-classical family estate from 1928, which was built here by the renowned painter Alfons Mucha.
Between 1924 and 1930, banker Otto Petschka also had a truly luxurious villa built here. The architect was inspired by French Baroque, and the Palace of Versailles also served as his muse. The villa, now with 148 rooms, has been transformed into the residence of the United States embassy.
Unique is also the only preserved work in its original state by the renowned architect Jan Kotěra. It is the Sucharda Studio Villa, which is even listed as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
The location offers not only First Republic and Art Nouveau beauties but also highly sought-after nature. It is home to a former royal game reserve, now known as one of Prague's most beautiful parks. The proximity to Stromovka is a great advantage for families with children, athletes, or dog owners. The expansive park offers many activities and is an ideal setting for romantic picnics, walks, running, or even cycling.
Nearby are also Letná Gardens and natural retreats towards Troja. It's like a hidden natural paradise amidst the hustle and bustle of the city.
Thanks to line A of the metro, you can reach the city center in no time, and if you're not a fan of underground transport, there are excellent public transport or tram connections. The transport service here is constantly improving, as evidenced by the new connection on Kladenská Street.
"We want to show that public transport is not just about moving from point A to point B, but it can also be an experience. At the same time, we listen to citizens' suggestions. The trial operation of the midibus on Kladenská Street will show us whether a regular line would help better connect the Dlouhý lán area and the old Vokovice with the metro, the school, and shopping centers,"
says Ondřej Matěj Hrubeš, councilor for transport for the Prague 6 district. Regarding the planned celebrations of World Public Transport Day.
In the vicinity of this residential area, there are also plenty of popular establishments. One of them is the renowned self-service wine bar Na břehu Rhôny. For coffee connoisseurs, there's Café Záhorský, and even listed in the Michelin guide is the gastronomic gem Bistro Dejvická 34.
You can visit the Váleček bistro or the Vegetka restaurant for a vegan treat. And if you are a chocolate lover, there is something here for you too. The family chocolate shop Kristyjan Chocolatiers will surely make your day sweeter.
