Tomáš Czernin

The Czernin family is a lineage that is visible to this day. Not just on the political stage, but leaving its mark on many significant monuments. Did you know that the mysterious death of Jan Masaryk took place in their palace?

They had a sense for art, politics, and a capacity for enthusiasm. From the imperial ambassador to the vice-president of the upper chamber of the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Republic. This is a noble family Czernins (or Černíns).

Černíns from Chudenice

The history of this family goes back to the 12th century, with each succeeding century the Czernins became more influential and famous. Among other things, they owned Chudenice, Švihov Castle or Kozel chateau.

The mysterious Černín Palace, you can occasionally tour

Their name is also associated with the Černín Palace in Prague. The baroque building is today the seat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It was built by Humprecht Jan Černín of Chudenice, more precisely, he designed it and thought it up in his head.

On his journeys, this imperial envoy literally fell in love in France and Italy with local architecture and wanted to have something baroque here too. The project was then created by Francesco Caratti. Thus one of the most beautiful buildings in the Czech Republic was created.

A mysterious death of Jan Masaryk took place here

It is not without interest that the first post-war Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jan Masaryk, also resided in the Černín Palace. His tragic death, which is still not clarified, happened exactly in this palace. His life ended in the courtyard.

Together with an extensive garden, it is a national cultural monument. From time to time, it opens its doors to the public. You can therefore walk through the cursed courtyard yourself.

Influential people and military leaders

This family has a knack for goal making. Heřman Černín was active at the Habsburgs' court. He was active in the army, in the 18th century some other members made a name for themselves as military leaders. Otokar Černín in the 20th century served as the Austro-Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs in Romania.

František Josef later represented the Emperor at the regional assembly.

After World War II, they lost their property

The history is similar everywhere. After the second World War, the expropriation of property took place here too. At that time they lost the castle in Sokolov and other residences. Some estates then returned to the hands of descendants, e.g. Dymokory Castle, where Tomáš Czernín is still actively involved.

Senator Tomáš Czernín as a classic nobleman

Tomáš Czernín, owner of Dymokory Castle, was until mid-2024 the Vice-President of the upper chamber of the Parliament of the Czech Republic and a member of TOP 09. For some time he was the 1st Deputy Chairman of the party, in 2023 he was replaced by Vlastimil Válek. He was also actively involved in local politics in the Nymburk region.

His father, Theobald Czernin, a member of the Czech nobility, died in 2015, His mother, Polyxena Lobkowiczová, belongs to the Lobkowicz lineage, specifically the Křimice line. They married in April 1961.

Theobald Czernin did not emigrate

The father of the Czech politician was among those aristocrats who did not emigrate and spent their whole life in their homeland. Theobald Josef Maria Rudolf Friedrich Count Czernin of Chudenice, as was his full name, was the son of Count Rudolf Czernin, who resisted the Nazis during the 2nd World War and signed a declaration of loyalty to the Czech nation by the Czech and Moravian nobility.

During the communist regime, Czernin couldn't study. He lived in an ordinary cottage in the mountains in Rudná u Nejdku in the Ore Mountains. He bought the house from German owners along with the land. He therefore had to support his large family first as a truck driver, later as an ambulance driver.

He can get noticed: It's necessary to distinguish migrants

The political views of Tomáš Czernin are heard and often remembered. In 2016, in connection with the migration crisis, he said that it is necessary to distinguish economic migrants from those who are needed.

During Covid, Miloš Zeman, who was trying to get Russian vaccines, was dubbed a"Russian cockroach”. .

In 2021, he also commented on the case of Dominik Feri and questioned the views of the victims by stating that "it is strange that it came to light before the elections".

On his website, he regularly shares news from TOP 09 and among other things, he maintains a strong stance against turning away from European liberal values.

"We cannot stand by as it turns away from the European path and basic democratic principles,"

summed up the deputy chairman of TOP 09 and senator Tomáš Czernin in one of the articles. He remains active in politics.
