The news from 2007 unusually struck when the Florida Seminole Indian tribe bought the global network of Hard Rock Café. No one expected that from them. And that was just the beginning. Today, the Hard Rock brand operates in more than 70 countries and runs hundreds of businesses. All under the wings of a tribe, which had trouble feeding its members in the mid-20th century. But that is long in the past. Today, children who are born into this remarkable Native American business are guaranteed a million-dollar fortune before they even reach adulthood. This is very different from the start that awaits most young Americans.
First Native American casino
In the mid-20th century, the Seminoles in Florida were still living in poverty. The tribe settled in the Everglades, known for its extensive marshes, making their living through hunting, fishing, gathering fruits, and simple agriculture. They built traditional huts from palm leaves called chickee, spoke their native languages, and often did not know English at all.
To earn a living, they made souvenirs, baskets, beads or performed in Indian villages for the entertainment of curious tourists. Just this year, it won its fifth consecutive award as the "Best Managed American Company" according to Deloitte. The Chairman of the Board, Jim Allen, who also heads the Indian companies Hard Rock International and Seminole Gaming, received another award this year. This time for his lifelong contribution to the entertainment industry, which is gaining recognition all over the world today.
And successes continue to grow outside the American continent. In July 2025, they opened a new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Ottawa, Canada. In Las Vegas, they then plan a hotel in the shape of a guitar named Hard Rock Las Vegas, which is to be completed around 2027. It will be at the site of the legendary Mirage hotel with the iconic volcano, which ended last year after 34 years ended. Such a large space also includes shops and conference rooms. The hotel then amounted to CZK 34.7 billion in conversion and it is expected that tourists in Las Vegas will enjoy similar luxury.
Sports betting and charity
However, the Seminoles are not just sticking to physical establishments. In 2024, they managed to win a long legal battle over sports betting. The Hard Rock Bet app now legally operates throughout Florida. They also added a local business specialty. Betting on the traditional sport of Jai Alai, which is a type of pelota, where a special wooden bat with a basket is used to hit the balls. And it is also considered the fastest ball game in the world, because the ball can reach a speed of up to 300 kilometers per hour.
