The victory of the pro-European party in the parliamentary elections in Moldova was a litmus paper in this former Soviet country, where Russian interference and disinformation campaigns spent millions of dollars to prevent the country from aligning with the main European stream. The ruling Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) easily defeated the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc. Although its lead was lower than four years ago, PAS still won the majority in the local parliament and brought Moldova, the poorest country in Europe, a step closer to entering the European Union.
Two years ago, the victory of PAS seemed much less likely in connection with extensive protests against higher energy prices and other problems that are vital for Moldova. However, its Sunday victory is crucial for all of Europe. The victory of the pro-Russian bloc would mean a danger towards further Russian aggression in the EU, wrote CNN on its website.
