On Wednesday afternoon, a huge piece of glacier broke off in the Swiss Alps and caused an avalanche of ice, mud and stones, which buried part of a mountain village that had been evacuated at the beginning of the month due to the danger of a rock slide. One person is currently missing. The decrease in permafrost can negatively affect the stability of mountain rocks, so it is probable that climate change played a role in the disaster.
Drone footage aired by the Swiss state television station SRF showed a vast expanse of mud and dirt completely covering part of the village of Blatten, the river flowing through it, and the forested slopes of the surrounding valley. "We have lost our village. The village is under rubble. We will rebuild it," commented Mayor Mathias Bellwald, The landslide buried about 90% of the village, reported CNN.
