Every year is special in some way and this year was no different. Unexpected twists on the political scene, unforgettable acting performances, or the rapid rise of artificial intelligence. Due to the constant flurry of events, it was easy to get lost in the available information and even completely miss some. That's why we bring you a look back at what shocked us and influenced us the most in 2025.
An incredible feat was achieved by a group of perpetrators in the Louvre Museum in Paris in October of this year. In just four minutes, they managed to steal jewels from Napoleon's collection, estimated at a value of more than two billion Czech crowns.
A worker's disguise, a hanging ladder, a grinder, and a ton of determination. That's all it took for the thieves to pull off this masterful heist. Media interest in the entire case was huge. Apart from expected universal outrage, entirely different emotions also surfaced. A certain part of social media users saw the theft as a kind of justice, and even cheered for the criminals.
"In fact, many of us may even catch ourselves somewhat rooting for the thieves - at least as a symbolic gesture of flipping off a world founded on obscene inequality and skewed priorities,"
Belén Fernández described the situation in her article for Al-Jazeera.
Famous singer Katy Perry managed to be mentioned in the media more than once this year. But no one will probably forget her "feminist" trip to Space. Commercial flights are not a novelty lately, but their promotion as breakthrough and progressive can be at least amusing. Since year 1963, this was the first purely female expedition to Space, which was supposed to appear as revolutionary and feminist. In the end, it seemed more comical.
"There's no place like home on Earth."
proclaimed the pop singer after she kissed the Earth on her knees upon her return.
The whole event would not have caused so much ridicule if it wasn't for the fact that the flight only lasted about ten minutes. The singer did not mention anywhere the negatives that the flight meant for the environment. The whole thing would have worked better if the expedition had been full of women who were not flying into space for their interest in astrology.
Well-known singer and rapper Nicki Minaj also unpleasantly surprised fans this year. In the past, she was known for supporting the whole queer community and did not hide her dislike for the current president of the USA. The reason was also her support of illegal immigrants, among whom she once belonged. But now the situation has completely turned around. Minaj has changed not only her opinions but also her appearance. The biggest turnaround came when she appeared on stage with the widowed Erika Kirk at a conference in Arizona. There she made it clear that fans can say goodbye to her former openness towards minorities.
"If you were born a boy. Stay a boy."
she said with a clear reference to the trans community during the conference.
Thanks to the rapid rise of artificial intelligence, everyone didn't have much time to admit how much it has advanced. This has led to many mistakes, where people believed something on the internet that was far from true. Such adorable confusion was caused by jumping animals on a trampoline, which quickly became an internet hit. This case is one of the innocent and somewhat amusing ones, but it still points to the fact that it it's always good to verify information.
