What is a talented actor's opinion on (non-)mandatory military service? And how much can a director influence an acting performance?

I would go to battle with Russia immediately. I prepared for the role for up to four years, claims Jan Nedbal, an actor awarded with the Czech Lion.

Actor Jan Nedbal at the Czech Lion Awards (2026).

Nurses from Blue Code, Inspector Max or Dads on a Mission. You might recognize the face of Jan Nesvadba from these TV projects. Now, a joyful breakthrough has occurred in his acting career – he received the prestigious Czech Lion award for a supporting role in the miniseries King of Šumava 2.

He was born in 1990 and comes from Děčín. He is not one of those actors whose path was clear from childhood.

He studied practical nursing at a secondary medical school. However, after high school, he enrolled in Prague's DAMU, where he successfully completed studies in alternative and puppet theater.

Television and Theater Roles

After studying, he felt drawn abroad. He went to Norway and even secured a theater engagement there. From 2018, he began appearing on television screens, initially in smaller roles. In 2019, however, he got the opportunity to showcase his acting skills to audiences and directors by playing one of the main roles in the web series Skrna. This was followed by more significant roles. Among them, for example, is the role of the poet Václav Bolemír Nebeský, the lover of Božena Němcová, in the miniseries Božena. In 2024, he also appeared in the award-winning film by Jiří Mádl Waves.

However, his portfolio of theater roles is also very rich. Since 2019, he has been performing at the J. K. Tyl Theatre in Plzeň. He also guest stars at the Divadlo Na Zábradlí in the play The Curious Case of Mr. Holmes. He is engaged at the National Theatre, where he performs in the play Colonel Švec. You can also see him at the Estates Theatre in the performance of Enchanted Land and at the Alfréd ve dvoře Theatre in the original play Tamura.

In 2021 and 2022, he portrayed the younger Jan Werich (alternating with Vojtěch Kotek) in the play Werich at the summer stage of the Museum Kampa.

Distinctive and Unconventional Outfit

At the Czech Lion Awards 2026, he arrived in good spirits and in a suit with a First Republic style, complete with a stylish hat. His outfit was a nod to the series King of Šumava, for which he received a nomination. He arrived accompanied by his attractive girlfriend.

This was not his first nomination, however. He had a chance to win the prestigious statue back in 2023 for his acting performance in the feature historical film Brothers, where he starred alongside Oskar Hes and Adam Ernest. However, he did not win that nomination, so he can now look forward to his first Czech Lion.

He answered journalists' questions very willingly, and we congratulate him on his well-deserved victory!

Fast confession:

Honza, how are you feeling today and what are you most looking forward to?

I'm a bit more at ease than last time, I have to say. And I'm probably most looking forward to the hosting, I'm curious how it will go for the lady... now I've forgotten her name. Maybe you should ask me something else. (laughter)

If you had the opportunity to host in the future, would you dare to try it?

No, that's not my area. I've never done it and I don't plan to start such a career.

Do you think this year's thank you speech could include something provocative?

Every year has brought something, so let's be surprised. If it's something provocative, I think it should be in a good way. If things are said about Ukraine or gender equality, I think that's appropriate. And if no one is doing a Nazi salute here today, it should be fine.

Who would you wish to win the Czech Lion this year?

Is Denisa Barešová nominated? I'm not entirely sure, but even if she's not nominated, I would wish it for her. Actually for everyone.

For what performance would you want to receive it?

Probably for the one I was nominated for.

How much does the director influence an acting performance on set? For example, in your case.

Ideally, as little as possible. When it does happen, it's great if it's positive. So far, I've only had good experiences with everyone I've worked with.

Do you remember how long you prepared for any of your roles?

I think it was the Mašín brothers. The project was canceled and started several times, so I think it was a total of about four years that we prepared for it with Oskar Hes.

Given the current political and security situation in the world - if the Czech Republic found itself in a state of war, would you defend your country?

I would immediately. If it was against Russia, right away. I'm a bit sorry that we don't have voluntary military service. I think anyone who wants to should be able to undergo 2-3 months of training, and it would only be beneficial.
