French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that France will increase its nuclear arsenal and, for the first time, will allow the temporary deployment of its aircraft equipped with nuclear weapons in allied countries as part of a new strategy aimed at strengthening Europe's independence.
In a speech that was planned long before the latest outbreak of war in Iran, Macron outlined how French nuclear weapons fit into European security, while leaders there express concerns about recurring tensions with U.S. President Donald Trump and the large-scale invasion of Russia in Ukraine.
Since Britain's departure from the bloc in 2020, France is the only nuclear power in the European Union.
"To be free, we must be feared," Macron said.
