On the night of March 15th to 16th, the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles hosted the 98th annual ceremony of the prestigious film awards known as the Oscars. This year's event was fortunate for us too, as Czech producers walked away with a statue for the remarkable documentary Mr. Nobody Against Putin. Host Conan O’Brien didn't hold back, taking a jab even at Chalamet. After fourteen years, we saw two winners in the best short film category. The vampire horror Sinners, led by Michael B. Jordan, dominated several categories.
A red carpet full of A-list celebrities. The event also featured couples that we see in the spotlight more sparingly. As the companion of the nominated Timothée, the famous star Kylie Jenner appeared, Paul Mescal was alongside his girlfriend and pop singer Gracie Abrams. From Regretting You, the couple Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames also appeared. Kate Hudson, nominated for the first time since 2001, brought her mother Goldie Hawn for support. The hosts chosen for red carpet interviews were excellent. There, we could enjoy the humor of successful podcasters like Amelia Dimoldenberg from Chicken Shop Date, Brittany Broski, or Jake Shane.
Radovan Síbrt and Alžběta Karásková are bringing home an Oscar. The documentary "Mr. Nobody vs. Putin" is about a Russian teacher who managed to capture footage of local propaganda in schools. The everyday reality of "brainwashing" students is a very chilling subject that will not leave you indifferent. The bold film won the award for Best Feature Documentary.
The Czech-Danish co-production has certainly contributed to the most politically significant film of this year's awards ceremony.
“In the name of our future, in the name of all our children, let's stop all these wars”
urged director Pavel Talankin during the presentation.
“We all face moral choices, but fortunately nobody is stronger than you think,”
declared a clear message from David Boreinsten as well.
If anyone really regretted anything that evening in the hall, it was most likely Timothée Chalamet. He was nominated for his role in Marty Supreme and was a strong favorite to win. This young and talented actor had won the hearts of the audience, and many were rooting for him to win. At least at the beginning. The actor's downfall was his interview for Variety, where his outrageous statement went viral.
"I really don’t want to work in ballet, opera, or similar fields where everyone is just trying to keep it alive, even though no one cares about these things anymore."
mentioned in the video.
If he had known that he wouldn't win any nominations at this year's Oscars and would become the target of many jokes, he might have preferred to refrain from making his assertion.
The film One Battle After Another celebrates the greatest successes, managing to win as many as six nominations. The satirical comedy is the absolute winner of the entire evening. Not only did it win in the Best Picture category, but it also took home five other statuettes.
The vampire horror film Sinners also performed very well, taking home four statuettes. Michael B. Jordan won the award for Best Acting Performance for his role as the twins Smoke and Stack.
This year’s nominations were dominated by monsters. The vampire Sinners weren't the only creatures that won. The film K-pop: Demon Hunters by Netflix also managed to turn its nomination into a win. It won not only Best Animated Film but also Best Original Song. The truth is that last year the animated film literally dominated the internet. If you have children, you probably saw it, and if you don’t have children, you couldn’t avoid its songs. The demons were truly everywhere.
