American Ambassador Criticized the Czech Government for Not Upholding Allied Commitments

According to the budget proposal of the new government of Andrej Babiš (ANO), the Czech Republic could become the country with the lowest defense investment within the entire NATO alliance. While in the neighborhood of aggressive Russia, all member countries agreed on gradually increasing defense expenditures to 3.5% of GDP, the Czech Republic might not even meet the previous commitment of 2% of GDP. It reached this value, after a long period of not fulfilling commitments, only under the government of Petr Fiala (ODS).

"This is not an arbitrary decision, a demand from the United States, or simply the signature of one government that can be easily overturned by another. It is an agreement between sovereign allies, each of whom relies on the others without exception," criticized the Czech government by American ambassador Nicholas Merrick from the perspective of a NATO hegemon according to ČTK.
