Turkish opposition leader faces 2,000 years in prison

The Turkish prosecutor called for a prison sentence of over 2,000 years for Ekrem Imamoglu, the incarcerated opposition mayor of Istanbul, on Tuesday, for allegedly leading a large corruption network that cost the state billions of lira, according to the indictment.

Imamoglu, who is the main political rival of President Tayyip Erdogan, has previously denied all charges against him, claiming they are politically motivated, and his party rejected the latest allegations as "nonsense" on Tuesday. In a separate move that further deepened the unprecedented year-long legal clampdown on Erdogan's critics, the Istanbul prosecutor asked the higher court to consider dissolving Imamoglu's main opposition Republican People's Party, reported CNN.
